This site is a work-in-progress and the series of posts are being assembled initially as an open discourse drawing upon the institute’s network. Other readers who may wish to contribute and are welcome to do so. The site is being compiled and edited by Ray Norman and Dr. Bill Boyd.

As the writing progresses various case studies will be identified to illustrate 21st C understandings of ‘musing places’ and the cultural and social within which they exist and can be understood.

Social networking and mobile technologies are beginning to be defining issues for museums in the 21st century. To be viable and relevant in a 21st Century context museums and art galleries now need to operate across three interfacing presences:

• Their physical site where collections can be experienced and contemplated;
• Within the online world via websites and social media; and
• In the 'mobile space' in an outreach context.

What this might mean for how these institutions engage with their audiences in future is only beginning to be understood by museums and art galleries across the world.
